A track level can go over when mixing, by plenty, and not cause a problem at the hardware level, if it gets brought down somewhere else in the mix (a buss) before going to hardware. Most likely though it will not sound good, unless you are doing it on purpose to create an effect in your buss compressor, (but see James's cat pic).
