The event got its name from the terrible, massive dust storms that blew through the area over a period of several years, destroying farms, agriculture, and property wherever they went. WebThus the Plains had undergone a dozen years of depression before the onset of the Dust Bowl in 1934, which in turn was the ecological consequence of earlier decades of too-assertive agriculture. The shortgrass Plains soil in places was destroyed by an excess of cattle and sheep grazing and of cultivation of corn, wheat, and cotton.
